HANDS UP 4 KIDS can and is making a difference to the life’s chances of huge numbers of young children, giving them an opportunity to achieve their academic and social potential.

You can join a Partner School’s Volunteer Team by:

  • Calling the Regional Coordinator to make a time to talk about your interest
  • Meet with the Regional Volunteer Coordinator and discuss what will work best for you and for HU4K
  • Provide personal referees and obtain a Working With Children Card

Once you have decided to become a HU4K Reading Volunteer :

  • Attend a friendly Orientation Hour

  • Attend an informal, friendly interview with one of our Coordinators

  • Become familiar with what we do at an Induction chat

  • Hear about the school’s and HU4K processes and procedures

  • Receive your Handbook that will explain everything and has some excellent hints about how to help make the experience of learning to read enjoyable for both you and the students

  • With the Coordinator, determine which Primary School HU4K tram you will be joining

  • Set your reading arrangements/schedule

  • Sign on – you choose the preferred day and time you’d like to attend the school – this can be just a term or longer, noting that you can start anytime you feel you’re ready,

Remember that you can still take holidays and meet any other commitments at any time -just let your Coordinator know when you will be away and others in your volunteer team may be able to take on a little more while you’re away. (Maybe this even fits with your part time work or other volunteer commitments)

HU4K Volunteer Networking Exchanges

We call these VNE’s- are held each term, providing an opportunity to meet with volunteers from other schools, swap notes, maybe ‘brag a little’ about your own students, make new friends, expand your own skills and knowledge about how kids learn, or hear how others are handling any particular situation they are experiencing with their students. These are enjoyable, very informal and informative sessions for all HU4K volunteer support readers.
